Speech and Language Therapy
Speech and Language Therapy is provided on an individual basis (pull-out model), group, or integrated within the classroom setting (push-in model). Therapy is focused on specific students needs. All students learn foundation skills in individual session which provide for generalization into the classroom. *Vocabulary – a key component to language is taken from the classroom curriculum and “given repeated and distributed practice”. Word understanding (receptive language), word decoding for reading (written words) and expressive naming is practiced. *Receptive Language- understanding the spoken word, phrases, sentences; including following directions is also a focus in the small therapy setting and generalized to the classroom. *Expressive Language: Students use their own speech, communication apps on an iPad, or SGD(speech generated devices), to express themselves, and to learn to interact socially. Music Therapy: Music Therapy takes place in a small group setting. Students are encouraged to express themselves through singing, playing instruments and dance. Communication, social skills and creative expression are the primary focus areas for therapy sessions.

Physical therapy is provided to students both individually and in small groups. The focuses of physical therapy are to help students develop gross motor skills, improve flexibility, modulate tone and improve strength. Students achieve these goals by participating in a variety of activities ranging from direct, hands on stretching to playing games that incorporate using multiple motor skills simultaneously. Consequently, by working in groups, physical therapy helps students build important social skills as well. OT
Occupational therapy services are provided to students on an individual basis. Each treatment session takes place within the therapy room or classroom where various types of equipment are available. Students work on developing sensory motor, upper extremity and hand strength, handwriting, and visual skills. The effective use of school tools is another area of focus. Scooter boards, Theraputty, pencil and paper, blocks, and scissors are among the many tools that are used to address these areas. Skills taught are carried over to the classroom through direct instruction and consultation with the classroom teacher. |
